Did you know that the risk of death in a house fire quadruples without a working smoke alarm? Imagine what this figure blows out too when we’re talking about unit complexes, hotels and resorts. For best safety and protection, you want your Cairns and Port Douglas smoke alarms to be working and you want to have an up to date fire escape plan, which is regularly practised and well-rehearsed in the event of an emergency. To make Queensland properties the safest in Australia, in relation to fire safety, new smoke alarm legislation was introduced and became effective as of 1 January 2017.
The new Queensland smoke alarm legislation specifies that all Queensland dwellings will be required to have interconnected photoelectric smoke alarms in all bedrooms, in hallways that connect bedrooms with the rest of the dwelling and on every level. Photoelectric smoke alarms see smoke and will alert you early, so you can escape. By having interconnected alarms, you will be alerted no matter where you are, or where the fire starts.
The legislation specifies the type, positioning and interconnecting of smoke alarms for Queensland homes. To comply with this legislation, all new dwellings and substantially renovated dwellings need to have interconnected photoelectric smoke alarms from 1 January 2017. For existing domestic dwellings leased and sold, they must be compliant by 1 January 2022 and in all other domestic dwellings by 1 January 2027.
